Black History Month

Sponsored by H-E-B

February is Black History Month.  This annual celebration of the achievements of black Americans grew out of “Negro History Week,”  started in 1926 by noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.  Thanks in part to the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of black identity, by the late 1960’s Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses.  In 1976, President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month.
